In Memory of Our Dear Friends

Abbie

1994 – March 17, 2003

I adopted Abbie about two years ago at the PETsMART in Sterling. At that time, you told me that Abbie had been with HART for almost six months, and you were glad to -finally- find somebody who wanted to adopt her, because she was such a sweet dog.

Abbie was a regular and favorite playmate with the neighborhood children (ages 5-9), and leaves behind her dad, Jim, and both cat and dog siblings.

Abbie will never be forgotten by her dear friends at HART!

Taffy

1990(?) – March 7, 2003

Little Taffy…you crossed the Rainbow Bridge less than 12 hours ago and we miss you so. Our pain and sorrow will be deep and long lasting. Your sweet little face will be etched in our memories forever, as will your kindness, gentleness and strength.

They say one man’s loss is another man’s gain and that is certainly true when we look back on your life. In 1994 a cruel person tied you to a post and left you in the "drop box" at the West Palm Beach Animal Shelter in Florida. You had to be scared and frightened…who knows how many hours you sat alone in the dark, in strange surroundings, without food, water, or a gentle pat on the head from a caring person. Gentle pats are what you lived for. A beautiful little yellow lab mix of some sort, you had recently given birth to puppies…what was their fate we wonder? Or do we want to know? You were estimated to be approximately four years old at the time. Did you know then that you would change the life of my mother forever?

After mom and her husband adopted you, your true personality shined. You and your feline counter part, Bri, would tag team squirrels in the back yard, nap together, talk to each other, and you had begging down to an art. You had your own cushion on the couch, it seems like you had your own place at the table, and you even had your own Jeep – Taffy’s Jeep as it was named. Besides the tangible things, you DEFINITELY have a place in all of our hearts.

A few years back, mom’s health started to deteriorate. While struggling to battle cancer, deal with chemo and radiation treatments, and a seemingly endless round of medical testing, YOU were her rock.. YOU have been her constant companion, her best friend, her confidante, her shadow, her caretaker. YOU brought her so much joy, happiness and peace that I cannot even begin to express our gratitude.

Taffy, you have been an inspiration to many and a friend to all. Mom will continue her battle with cancer, but now without you by her side. Her memories of you will provide her the strength and comfort she needs to prosper. She loves you tremendously and always will. Thank you, Taffy, for seeing (and getting) my mother this far…

- Karyn M. Croteau

Please remember Taffy’s story while looking for your new pet.
Shelter dogs, rescue dogs, and "older" dogs deserve loving homes, too.
You may be pleasantly surprised by the joy and comfort a mixed breed will provide your family.
